Whether you are trying to lose weight or just be healthy in body, mind and soul, eat whole foods as much as possible! (fresh fruit, vegetables, minimally processed meats, dairy, grains) I say minimally processed meats, dairy, and grain because these will all be somewhat processed if you are buying them in a store.

There are no quick and easy magic bullets when it comes to health. To be healthy, you must eat healthy the majority of the time. So yes, you absolutely can splurge every once and a while. And when you do splurge, it is that much more enjoyable. I personally splurge at least one meal a week. Splurging on a meal is fun and it also reinforces your smart eating habits.
How does it do this? Well, if you are used to eating healthy foods, you are also used to higher energy levels, mental clarity, and no indigestion. These benefits will undoubtedly be momentarily lost when you splurge, but who cares, it will all recover as soon as you return to your normal healthy eating habits.
The morale of the story:
- Healthy eating is a lifestyle, not a “kick”
- The less processed your food is, the better. Processing involves any action on a food that changes it from its natural form.
- Eat whole foods. (Fruits, Vegetables etc.)
- Treat yourself. Splurge every once and a while. This should be enjoyable, but should also reinforce your healthy eating habits. (i.e. indigestion is no fun, so eat healthy food!)
Here are a few links to some excellent recipe books that use whole foods to create tasty snacks and meals. Honestly these cook books might be considered cheating because the healthy snacks and meals are so good, it makes you feel like you are splurging every day!
